I have a butterfly bush and a big old butterfly caught my eye. It was purple with black. Its poor wings were frail and parts were broken off. I was able to take a picture very close to it and it did not try to fly away.
It reminded me of visiting the elderly home. I would go in and visit some and they would not move or respond. I realized quickly that growing old with grace is very hard. It is of course very hard for the residence but it is equally hard for the nurses and helpers.
At first I was fighting for the rights of the residence. One lady would cry and cry for help and yet I would not see a nurse appear. After a while I learned which elderly were more demanding than the others and actually cried wolf for help. Then I began to understand why the nurses did not come running right away because everything was urgent to the resident. It is a very hard job for the nurses. I was always siding with the elderly but noticed the nurses had to know the patient and have wisdom.
I just would walk around praying the nurses would have a huge amount of grace to give all day. I prayed that the elderly would grow old with grace and dignity.
I knew that God would agree with that prayer too! At times I wish each person would know how much God had loved them and was there with them. I realized that those that did not have that assurance were in more pain and anguish.
I learned from the nurses that the residence that could quote scripture never lost the memory of scripture even if they had elzheimer. The nurses marveled and stated "it was always with them till the end." Wow! Isn't that God's promise? He would be with us till the end!
While rereading the Gospel of John around this same time of discovering the butterfly. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Jesus was the same as the spoken word of God, therefore if we memorize scripture we are carrying Jesus with us. We should know this basic truth Jesus is the word !
I always ask questions when I hit upon such a truth as this. If you really understood that Jesus was in the beginning, he is the spoken promise of God, wouldn't you want to really know the words of God? Such a profound truth is magnificent. It was hidden in the hearts of the elderly and they know it till the end.
Asking questions about God's word is okay. In fact just don't let me quote it pick it up and read it for yourself.
The old butterfly is completing His circle of life. We too will stop breathing one day. If you are already reading the bible my prayer is that you really connect with the God who created you. The point of reading the word is to catch your eye and hopefully you remember it. Maybe while your in the grocery line or whatever you will remember and share!
PRAYER: Please help me to read the word and understand it. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood[a] it.
